The Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography (BSU) is the official organ
of the physicians working in the field of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound
in Bangladesh. It was established in 1988 with a very few members who
were pioneer of Ultrasonography in Bangladesh. At present about 200 physicians
are the members of this society.

Atomic Energy Commission first introduced ultrasound in medical
diagnostic field in our country in early part of 1980's through
Institute of Nuclear Medicine in Dhaka. Soon a few private centres
also came forward. The new imaging modality became very popular
among the doctors as well as among the patients within a very short
time. The demand of the subject grew very fast. But there were only
a hand counted qualified doctors in that field. The pioneers took
the challenge to take this new subject ahead and to do that they
felt to form a society and BSU is the result of that necessity. |

The
Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography has played a significant role in
promotion and development of ultrasound in this country. Now BSU is an
important member of Asian Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology
(AFSUMB) and also World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology
(WFUMB). The society is also
affiliated with The Jefferson Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (JUREI), The Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. USA. The society has got the honor to be the First WFUMB Centre of Excellence. Now BSU is a prestigious and well reputed organization in home and abroad. It has been recognized as a unique ultrasonographic society of the world.
The Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography is mainly engaged with educational activities. It has trained more than 500 doctors in this field who are now serving not only in different corners of the country but also to the other parts of the world. The society has already established one institute naming "The Bangladesh Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine & Research (BIUMR)” which is affiliated to The University of Science & Technology Chittagong (USTC) for post graduate education in the field of medical ultrasound.
BSU has its own office with a well equipped auditorium and a small library in Eastern Plaza, 9th floor, Hatirpool, Dhaka. It has got a Training and Research Centre at 6th floor of the same plaza which also gives ultrasound service to the patients at a very nominal price.
